Prambanan: Hindu temples from the 9th century

We had the opportunity to explore both Prambanan and then Borobudur during our stay in central Java in the town of Yogyakarta. In terms of splendor the Hindu temples of Prambanan are some of the most gorgeous temples complexes we’ve ever seen. As you walk in and around the three main temples you can read via the carved motifs the story of Rama and Sita in such exquisite detail.

The temples were started in the ninth century by King Rakai Pikatan as a response to the Buddhist temple of Borobudur and nearby Sewu Buddhist temple. They’re some of the largest Hindu temples in all of Southeast Asia. The temples of Prambanan are as impressive as the Hindu and Buddhist temples of Cambodia’s Angkor Wat in terms of detailed carvings and size.

  1. As I “ride” along in your journey my thought goes to “the more we learn, the more we want to learn”. Thank you for providing me with an opportunity to be a small part of your journey. ~~ Jackie
